How to Get There and Move Around

Beirut is pretty well connected via air and also has the only commercial airport in Lebanon. The airport is still expanding, and new amenities are being added, but still, it serves the purpose pretty well. Another way to enter Beirut is via sea, as the seaport is commercially very active, you would find decent deals and carriers for a safe passage.

For traveling inside the city although Uber is an option, sometimes the local transports are better in terms of time consumption as well as money, but if you do not know the local language, then it’s a blessing in disguise. Walking in the middle east is not a good idea as the temperatures here are on the higher sides, especially for people who come from lower areas. If you are planning to travel as the locals do, you will have to look for the mini buses or the taxis that operate in the city. The locals call a taxi and keep adding passengers like a sharing cab and call it service. You can stop a taxi and say “service” and he will take you to your destination but will be picking and dropping other passengers along the way.

A short ride in taxi costs around $1 - $2. You can also rent a car for yourself if you are planning to visit the outskirts of the city, and since you are in the Middle East, fuel should not be a problem. Just keep in mind that traffic lights are something people in Beirut do not take seriously. The thing is if you are going in and around the city, public transport is the best, but for long-distance travels, use Uber or rent a car.

By air:

Beirut – Rafic Hariri International Airport is located just 9 kilometers from the city and is one of the busiest airports as it the only commercial airport in the country. It is pretty much connected from all parts of the world as direct and connecting flights are available without any major hassle. The airport recently got new counters as well as facilities and is still being expanded, so future travelers are going to have little or no difficulty visiting Beirut. Middle Eastern Airlines is the cheapest as Beirut is its hub.

By bus:

Buses are not one of the trusted mediums to enter Lebanon as the border areas are in constant tension due to the political game happening in the Middle East. There was recently a tension between Syria and Lebanon which has affected the borders, so plan your trip vigilantly. The local transportation is pretty smooth; there are minibuses here that ferry you around the town at nominal prices which is generally less than 2$.

By car:

Beirut is a very small city, and if you are planning to visit places inside the city, a rental car might not be the best option. Driving is not a strong quality among the local people, and the traffic lights aren't respected too, so if you are in for some adventure, you can rent a car and move around. Other than that you can book an Uber for pretty much anywhere, but the charges would be more than the local taxis or service as it is called.

By train:

Lebanon had an extensive railway network connecting the whole region and opening up borders for travel and trade before the civil war. The destruction that happened during the civil war left most of the tracks and stations nonfunctional, after which it has not been operational. Revival plans have often been made but nothing concrete has happened so far.

By boat:

The Port of Beirut is Lebanon’s main port and is one of the largest and busiest ports on the Eastern Mediterranean. Some very reputed cruise companies offer great prices if you wish to travel by boat. You can also enjoy cruise tours in and around Beirut and have a good time.

Visas:

One of the best things about Beirut is that most nationalities get a 1-month free visa on arrival which is extendable to 2 months for the citizens of the EU, Japan, South Korea, USA, Canada, Australia, Britain, and even Iran. If you are from any other country, please confirm regarding the visa from your embassy.

Digital Nomads and Remote Work

Beirut is a little expensive to live in and due to its positioning on the map, political stability is never a guarantee. So if you are considering remote work in Beirut, a short term engagement is a good idea but do not invest in anything for the long term. Startup wise, Lebanon is not ranked very good as compared to other countries.

Internet and Mobile Operators

Just like the rest of Lebanon, the internet is a big issue as it is pretty slow almost everywhere. If the internet is a big thing for you, get a SIM card. Internet Packs range from $10 - $30 depending on the amount of data you want. The two most reliable network providers with almost the same pricing are named below

  • Alfa
  • Touch

Gambling and Casinos

Lebanon decided to curtail all online gambling sites based overseas after June 2013, and there are only two spots in the whole of Lebanon where it is legal to gamble.

  • Casino du Liban
  • Hippodrome du parc de Beyrouth racing circuit

Casino du Liban located in Maameltein is the only casino in the country. If you are fond of betting, the Hippodrome du parc de Beyrouth gives you an opportunity to bet on one of the finest horse races in the Middle East. Apart from these, there are no other places you can gamble or bet in Beirut.

Weed and Drugs

Weed and Drugs are illegal in Lebanon, and so is any related action. But if you feel the need for it, you might have to build up some connections. A club is the best place to inquire about it, you can subtly ask for it, and people will hook you up. A lot of the youth does smoke weed, but it is still a taboo. You can find good quality stuff for $30 for 10g.

Health, Fitness, Gyms and Massage

With a recent rise in the living standard, Beirut has seen a surge in the fitness craze. There are tons of gyms spread out across the city and vast open spaces. The Horsh Beirut is the city’s public park with 400,000 square meters of land is open from 7 AM to 7 PM for all. So if you are into peaceful and long jogs, Horsh is the place for you.

STDs and HIV

Lebanon is not free from the AIDS epidemic. Although on the lower side, roughly 170 cases of HIV are reported every year.Make sure you use protection, especially if you are opting for paid services.

Stay Safe

Beirut itself is relatively safe. Avoid any governmental or military convoys that may be passing by. Lebanese people have adapted to all those situations.

As such, Beirut is one of the safest cities in the Middle East. Although you will find heavy police and military presence, its just because of the neighboring country and the politics around it, which is very unstable. There are hardly any cases of robbery or fights here and since the state laws are not based on sharia, you are okay even if you break some Islamic laws. Nightlife is also smooth, the only thing you have to take care of is to be nice and act normal.
