Weed and Drugs

The use of drugs in the city of Tbilisi is quite common in electronic music events. Weed and party drugs are popular especially with the younger crowd. Following the Georgian Dream party's 2025 tightening of drug regulations, marijuana laws in Georgia have recently changed. Although personal cannabis use was decriminalized by the 2018 Constitutional Court ruling, possession and cultivation penalties have been reinstated by the new amendments.

According to the new law, possessing more than five grams of marijuana carries a maximum sentence of six years in prison. Additionally, cultivating even a few plants may result in criminal charges.

Visitors should be aware that it is still illegal to purchase, sell, or smoke marijuana in public. The police, particularly in Tbilisi and Batumi, strictly enforce these laws. Fines or incarceration may follow even minor infractions. Georgia is no longer as permissive of cannabis as it appeared to be after 2018, according to the government's clear message. Since bringing cannabis or CBD products into the nation could be interpreted as drug smuggling, travelers are strongly discouraged from doing so. Small-scale private consumption is still the only legal exception, though this is currently being closely examined. It is better to take in Georgia's wine, cuisine, and culture when you are there rather than its cannabis.
