Yeah… The difference between the average price of a hostel and the average price of a 3-star hotel is 39 $. Finally, if you want to stay in 5-star hotel, you will pay around 225$ for night.

Beer in a grocery shop: US$0.5 - $1

Ukrainians are not that famous for drinking beer and it is not top quality, but there are some exceptional beers. The most famous Ukrainian beers are Chernihivske, Obolon, and Lvivske. You can buy these for as low as 0.5 $ (500 ml.) Imported beer maintains somewhat standard pricing, but it is definitely lower than in other countries.

How to Get There and Move Around

By air: Boryspil International Airport is located 36km south-east from the city center. From 2018 onwards, the most affordable tickets provided by national companies (two-way ticket for 65 $) are for the flights to and from the other Ukrainian cities as well as Poland, Lithuania, and Turkey. Terminal D at this airport offers very good exchange rates. In December of 2018, train connection between Kiev central station and Boryspil was officially opened. There is another Airport called Zhulyany Airport which is located 8 km southwest of the city center. It is mainly used by low-budget companies such as Wizzair. A cab will cost you around 17$ (expensive because of the airport).

By bus: There are three types of “buses”: bus(on the wheels), trolley and trams. The general rule is to simply push your way in as these are unbelievably crowded. Once you get on board, you will have to buy a ticket. There is a special lady that sells these. You can also buy them at kiosks near stops. Once you acquire a ticket, which costs 0.3, you will have to validate it via small punchers attached to the posts inside the bus. You can also try minivans (Marshrutky), but this is highly unadvisable. The only good thing is that you can just yell “stop!” and the driver will stop 100m in front. However, we think that the metro is better.

By car: Taxis are a convenient way to travel when you do cannot stand the rush and crowd of other means of public transport. The most popular taxi apps are Uklon, Uber, and Hopin. However, many taxis still have to be called by phone. There are many wild cabs. Just raise your hand and stop it. Before entering, you must negotiate the price! As a rule of thumb, rides within the downtown should not cost more than 3$. Starting price for taxi services is around 1.8 $. Cost of a kilometer is around 0.2$.

By train: Metro is one of the best ways to travel around Kiev. It is clean and fast and easy to navigate through once you know that there are only three metro lines (green, blue and red), all of which go through the city center. It has 52 stations in total. A ride costs around 0.3 $. This gets you one journey with the interchanges. Once you enter the metro, you will have to purchase a token which you will need to slip into the turnstile to enter. Trains arrive every 30 to 150 seconds during business hours, every 5 minutes after 8 pm and every 15 after 10:30 pm. It closes at midnight and reopens the following day at 6 am.

By boat: Poshtova Ploshcha is the main stop for boats navigating along Dripro river. In summer, you can travel by boat to Mezhyhirya residence or Kaniv town. There are also short city tours available.

Visas: Most countries do not need a visa to enter Ukraine and stay there for 90 days. However, most countries from Africa, Asia, and South America do need a visa or a document confirming the tourism or diplomacy to be the purpose of their visit. To obtain it online will cost you 85$ while obtaining it in Ukrainian embassy will cost 65$.

Digital Nomads and Remote Work

Most foreigners need to know Ukrainian or Russian to find a job in Ukraine. If you do know these languages, then you can work any ordinary job. Most people are working without being declared anyway (gray economy.)

Foreigners might sometimes work as teachers of their native language. Pay is usually decent enough to live in Kiev by local standards. Those with skills in demand, such as accountants, IT professionals and academically oriented citizens can be employed in educational institutions, both foreign and domestic, as well in global companies. However, for this, you will need a working permit which is not that hard to acquire, especially if the company issues a request for you. However, you will need your CV and educational accreditation submitted for the permit.

Internet and Mobile Operators

It is easy to obtain a SIM card on any kiosk. 4G internet will cost you around 5$ for whole month. This service is really cheap in Ukraine. If you call the same mobile provider, your call is free of charge. Prices have not been raised since 2014, so now it’s only $1-2 per month for a mobile phone with unlimited Internet access. Most popular Ukrainian providers are:

Hard drugs, including cocaine and heroin, are too expensive for ordinary Ukrainian. However, these can be acquired in “elite” clubs and bars, especially in Kiev. Just let your clothes and behavior scream “foreigner” and drug dealers will practically hit you without being called for. Maybe the best way to acquire drugs is through contacts of a local friend. Fitness Center “Sport life”- This is one of the largest and most popular chains of fitness centers in Ukraine. This is the place where the affordability meets luxury. Because of the marginalization of drug addicts, there is a rise in number of HIV infections. Data from the period of 2009-2013 collected by United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS suggests that among those that inject drugs around 20% of men and women have HIV. In 2015, around 72% of new HIV infections were transmitted through sexual activities. Around 0.9% of population is infected (around 240.000 people). Sex workers have a country average of 5.9%, while in Kiev itself, among sex workers, this percentage rises to 23.4%. More importantly, HIV is spreading from the marginalized groups into general population. Some other STDs such as syphilis, gonorrhea and genital herpes (HSV) are also on the rise, while chlamydia is decreasing due to easy treatment. Unfortunately, there is no recent data, and these are only estimations. As always, it is advisable to wear condoms.

The usual "don't be stupid" advice seems to be adequate. Kiev is a generally open and friendly city and stays lively until at least 23:00 in most districts.
