  • AIS: It is probably the best option for tourists, as it provides the perfect balance between mobility and price. The network is not overly quick, but it remains reliable. Also, AIS usually have good deals when it comes to data plans.
  • Truemore: It is an up and coming brand that is making waves with younger markets. They are extremely cheap, as the company seeks to turn spare cash into revolutionary profit schemes; however, much like dtac, you don't want their sim card if you plan on traveling round the outskirts of the town.

Gambling and Casinos

Gambling is one of the illegal activities in Thailand. Unlike drugs, it is an area of the law which the public seems to bend a bit, as there are a number of underground gambling rings that run throughout the nation. As a foreigner, it is better to stay clear of these activities for a few reasons. Firstly, you do not have communication to act as a barrier of protection, should you get caught. Second, the law is not on your side, so you could find yourself in a lot more trouble than the locals. Most of Thailand's problems are blamed on tourists. Sometimes this is rightly so, as with the pollution of Phuket. However, the legal system is not kind to foreigners and the punishments for gambling are doubly harsh.

Weed and Drugs

Thai law is quite strict when it comes to drugs. In fact, strict is an understatement. Alcohol always flows in abundance. In fact, you can buy buckets of beer from a local bar or shebeen. All forms of narcotics are difficult to find, especially if you are a tourist. Possession of weed is punishable with at least ten years of imprisonment. If you are caught with a harder narcotic, Thai law allows for the death penalty. Usually countries are forgiving to visitors, but Thailand's justice system punishes expats to a greater extent. This may be because of a language barrier, but the message is clear: don't do drugs in Thailand.

Health, Fitness, Gyms and Massage

Thailand has a very big fitness industry which centres around the martial arts industry, particularly the sport of Muay Thai. There aren't many western-styled commercial gyms; however, you can usually find a single gym run by a couple of people. These gyms are mainly targeted at tourists, and they charge around $4 per day. Hua Hin is not the most popular tourist destination, so expect prices to be a lot less than Phuket or Koh Samui. Sometimes you can find a gym for as little as $1 per day, but it's usually hidden away and in a dingy area.

  • Holiday Inn

The former is right on the coast, and the spa overlooks the ocean. Thai massages are world famous, so you are always in for a treat. Massage parlors on the street are usually a front for prostitution. The girls stand outside of these massage venues and ask men passing by if they would like a massage. Obviously, the massage is a bit more expensive than normal, but it does come with a "happy ending"

STDs and HIV

The HIV rate in Thailand is a bit of a worry. More than 1 percent of the population have the virus, which is an extremely alarming rate. Naturally, the prostitutes are the highest carriers of STDs, as the girls often live in poverty and struggle to maintain hygienic conditions. There are a few horror stories of girls serving a customer just after seeing another man - and this is without cleaning herself first.

Hua HIn is not as bad as Bangkok with regards to STDs, as the population is not as dense, nor is the poverty rate as high. Hua Hin is generally safe unless you approach the city with a bit of naivety. Hua Hin is a lot like Bangkok, with lots of inner-city corners and peddlers around every bend. Much of Thailand's crime centres around drugs, prostitution and human trafficking. However, petty crime can be a problem if you don't have your wits abut you. Be careful of venturing into side alleys with not many people around.

The most common time for pickpockets is during the night markets and in clubbing venues. Massage parlours, which are really a front for prostitutes, are also known to be dodgy places, as they try anything to get your valuables. This is especially true if you are a tourist.
