King George VI visited Canada and the United States in the summer of 1939. He made public addresses and appearances in Ottawa, Niagara Falls and Washington. The primary purpose of his visit was to alert the people and the leaders of Canada and the US to the alarming developments in Europe.

The King is wearing a ceremonial uniform as First Lord of the Admiralty. He had served in the Navy in WWI and had been under fire at the Battle of Jutland.

The statue is carved in granite. The artist was Winfred "Win" Wood.
